Food for the Garden: Acts of Faith

Matthias Strom St. Peter in prayer  (1640)

Prayer

Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.

Philippians 4:6 (NIV)

Set time aside to pray.   Traditional prayer times include morning, midday, evening and compline (end of day).  We pray for a variety of reasons.

Overall, we pray because prayer is an important way to communicate with God and to seek his guidance, forgiveness, and help in our lives.

The Lord's Prayer

Our Father, who art in heaven,

Hallowed be thy name.

Thy kingdom come,

Thy will be done on earth,

as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread.

And forgive us our debts,

as we forgive our debtors.

And lead us not into temptation,

but deliver us from evil:

For thine is the kingdom,

and the power, and the glory,

forever. Amen.

Reading Scripture

All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.

2 Timothy 3:16-17 (NIV)

Set time aside to read from scripture.   It may be a single verse, a short passage or one or more chapters.  Any amount of time spent reading scripture is valuable.

We read the Bible for a variety of reasons.

Overall, we read the Bible because it is the word of God and it contains important teachings and guidance for our lives.

Worship

Come, let us bow down in worship,

let us kneel before the Lord our Maker

Psalm 95:6 (NIV)

Make a plan and attend a communal worship service, prayer service, fellowship meeting or bible study.  We attend worship services for a variety of reasons. Here are some of the most common reasons:

Overall, we attend worship services because it is an important way to honor God, deepen our understanding of our faith, connect with others, and receive guidance and inspiration for our lives.

Service

You, my brothers and sisters, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the flesh; rather, serve one another humbly in love. For the entire law is fulfilled in keeping this one command: “Love your neighbor as yourself.”

Galatians 5:13-14 (NIV)

Look for an opportunity to serve and act on it.  An act of service involves helping others and serving them in some way.  Service is a donation of time.  Here are some examples:

Volunteering

Helping Others

Visiting and Listening

Giving

Honor the Lord with your wealth,

    with the firstfruits of all your crops;

Donating Money

Donating Goods

Other Faithful Acts

Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment.  And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’  All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.”

Matthew 22:37-41 (NIV)

We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.

2 Corinthians 10:5 (NIV)

Being obedient to God means following God's commands, teachings, and principles as revealed in the Bible. It involves willingly submitting one's will and desires to God's authority and living in accordance with His will.

Obedience to God is a response to God's love and grace.  God is the creator of all things and has revealed Himself through various means, including Scripture, prayer, and the Holy Spirit.
